This is a project initiated by Richard Allen (6DBY
Manager from 2003-8) and which he describes as the highlight of
his time at Larrkardi Radio. The project was designed to
preserve the stories of history and country as told by local
elders of the Kimberley. Richard recorded many of the stories on
location to make these great historians feel comfortable and to
preserve their authenticity.
In 2004 Radio 6DBY won the Community Broadcasting Association of
Australia award for "Best New Program" with the Stories of
History & Country series. The collection currently consists
of more than 20 volumes and more than a hundred stories of many
aspects of the Kimberley from graphic accounts of being chased
up a creek by the policeman who wanted to put 3 year-old Sam
Lovell on the back of a truck and take him away, to stories of
being attacked by a crocodile, or people who communicated with
sharks, and stories of the Japanese attack on Derby during WW2.
This ongoing project for Radio 6DBY is an effort to capture
and preserve the stories before there is no one left to tell
them. They are broadcast regularly on 97.9FM.
The stories have been edited and formatted for ease of
